U.S. Army Specialist Jarrett Pearson Griemel, 20, of La Porte, Texas, was killed in action on June 3, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Gardez, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Jarrett Pearson Griemel was a 20-year-old soldier from La Porte, Texas. He served with the 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, part of Task Force Yukon under the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). According to his service record, his deployment to Afghanistan followed previous assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

On June 3, 2009, Griemel was killed at Forward Operating Base Gardez in Paktia Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire while on a dismounted patrol. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in the same engagement that day.

Griemel's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2009, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and intense fighting in eastern provinces like Paktia, where insurgent forces contested control of key terrain and supply routes.

His body was returned to Texas. A memorial service was held in La Porte, and he was buried with military honors at Grand View Memorial Park in Pasadena, Texas. The U.S. Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations.

He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Texas Capitol. His name is included in the roster of more than 2,300 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
