Their Story

Kevin Douglas Grieco was a 35-year-old Staff Sergeant from Bartlett, Illinois. He served with Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery Regiment, a unit based in Sycamore, Illinois, as part of the Illinois Army National Guard. According to unit records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On October 27, 2008, Grieco was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the village of Pol-e Khosmi, located in Afghanistan's Farah province. He was part of a patrol operating in the region at the time of the incident. The Defense Casualty Analysis System recorded his death as hostile.

Grieco's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2008, the conflict saw a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and combat operations, particularly in southern and western provinces like Farah, where insurgent activity was prevalent.

Following his death, the Illinois National Guard confirmed the loss. He was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. Memorial services were held in Illinois, and he was buried with military honors.

Staff Sergeant Grieco is memorialized on the Illinois Fallen Heroes website and at veterans' memorials in his home state. His name is inscribed on Panel 41E, Line 13 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
