Robert Stephen Greniger was a 21-year-old from Greenfield, Minnesota, who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On July 12, 2011, Lance Corporal Greniger was killed while conducting operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death was the result of hostile action, though specific details of the engagement were not publicly released.
Greniger died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks.
