Kristopher Daniel Greer was a 25-year-old Marine Corps reservist from Ashland City, Tennessee. He served with Delta Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, which was attached to the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. His unit was based in Knoxville, Tennessee, as part of the 4th Marine Division.
Corporal Greer was wounded by hostile action in Helmand province, Afghanistan, in late July 2010. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was medically evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for treatment. He died of his wounds there on August 8, 2010.
Greer's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2010, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a major offensive in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold, where combat engineers faced significant threats from improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Following his death, the Marine Corps notified his family in Tennessee. A local news report from the time noted his death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Corporal.
Corporal Greer is memorialized on the Fallen Heroes Memorial website and in the U.S. Defense Department casualty lists. His unit, the 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, continues to be cited in official Marine Corps histories of the Afghanistan conflict.
