Their Story
Jeremy Richard Greene was a 24-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from Springfield, Ohio. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York. Greene had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.
On April 28, 2007, Greene was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol near Forward Operating Base Orgun-E in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. The patrol was reportedly part of a larger operation to disrupt militant activity along the volatile border region with Pakistan.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2007, the conflict had entered a phase of intensified counterinsurgency operations in the country's eastern provinces, where Taliban and other militant groups were active.
Greene's death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local Ohio media. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His unit continued its deployment following the incident.
Sergeant Greene is memorialized on the 10th Mountain Division monument at Fort Drum and is listed among the more than 2,300 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom. His name appears on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.
