U.S. Army Specialist Douglas Jay Green, 23, of Sterling, Virginia, was killed in action on August 28, 2011, in Sperwan Ghar, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Douglas Jay Green grew up in Sterling, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned as an infantryman to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

On August 28, 2011, Specialist Green was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the village of Sperwan Ghar, located in Panjwa'i District, Kandahar Province. The area was a known insurgent stronghold and a focus of coalition clearing operations.

Green's death occurred during the latter stages of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, U.S. troop levels were near their peak following a surge ordered in 2009, with intense fighting concentrated in southern provinces like Kandahar.

Green's death was reported by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His remains were returned to the United States.

He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by local veterans' groups in Northern Virginia. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial at the Loudoun County Courthouse in Leesburg, Virginia.
