Their Story
Anthony Gabriel Green was a 28-year-old sergeant from Matthews, North Carolina. He served with the 143rd Infantry Detachment, Forward 6, based in Austin, Texas, a unit of the Texas Army National Guard. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On October 16, 2009, Sergeant Green died at Forward Operating Base Ghanzi in Afghanistan's Paktika province. The U.S. Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. A contemporaneous report from the Associated Press stated the base came under a complex attack involving small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades, resulting in multiple casualties.
Green's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Army, and insurgent groups including the Taliban and al-Qaeda. FOB Ghanzi was a remote outpost in a volatile region near the Pakistan border.
Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced the loss. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
Sergeant Green is memorialized on the Texas Capitol's memorial wall for fallen service members and by the 143rd Infantry Regiment. His name is included on the Afghanistan War memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
