Joshua Allen Gray, a 21-year-old Private First Class from Van Lear, Kentucky, was killed in action on February 10, 2014, at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, while serving with the U.S. Army.
Their Story
Joshua Allen Gray was a Private First Class in the United States Army, assigned to the Division Signal Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York. He was from the small community of Van Lear in eastern Kentucky. According to his service record, his military duties included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
He died on February 10, 2014, at Bagram Airfield, the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he was killed by enemy small-arms fire. The incident reportedly occurred during a mounted patrol on the base's perimeter, a routine security operation.
Gray's death came during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2014, the mission was in its final stages, transitioning to a train-and-advise role under Operation Resolute Support. The period was marked by a drawdown of U.S. forces, yet combat operations and insurgent attacks on major bases like Bagram continued.
His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at the Mountain Memorial Gardens in Staffordsville, Kentucky. The Johnson County community held vigils and fundraisers for his family. The Army posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
He is remembered by family and friends as a dedicated soldier who loved his home state. His name is inscribed on the Johnson County Veterans Memorial and is included in the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense.
