Sgt. 1st Class Alejandro Granado III, 42, of Tatum, Texas, was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier. He died on August 2, 2009, in Qole Gerdsar, Afghanistan, from hostile fire.
Their Story
Sgt. 1st Class Alejandro Granado III was a 42-year-old soldier from Tatum, Texas. He served with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), a Mississippi Army National Guard unit based in Grenada. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
Granado died on August 2, 2009, in the village of Qole Gerdsar, in Afghanistan's Kunar Province. The Department of Defense stated he was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a combat operation. He was serving as a Special Forces weapons sergeant at the time of his death.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2009, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Kunar, which bordered Pakistan.
The Pentagon announced his death on August 4, 2009. He was survived by his wife and children. Granado was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal for his service and sacrifice.
Granado is memorialized on the Special Forces Memorial Wall at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. His name is also inscribed on the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Newton.
