U.S. Army Specialist Kevin James Graham, 27, of Benton, Kentucky, was killed in a hostile incident at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, on September 26, 2009.

Their Story

Kevin James Graham was a 27-year-old specialist from Benton, Kentucky, serving with the U.S. Army. He was assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, part of the 5th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division's Stryker Brigade Combat Team (Task Force Stryker).

On September 26, 2009, Graham died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident at Kandahar Airfield, a major coalition base in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated the cause was a non-combat related injury resulting from a hostile action, though specific details of the event were not widely released.

Graham's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting, with insurgent forces employing indirect fire and other attacks against coalition bases in regions like Kandahar.

Following his death, Graham was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. He was survived by his wife and other family members. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in his home state of Kentucky.

Specialist Graham is memorialized on the Pentagon's memorial marker for Operation Enduring Freedom casualties from 2009. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Marshall County Courthouse in Benton, Kentucky.
