U.S. Army Specialist Ryan John Grady, 25, of Bristow, Oklahoma, died on July 2, 2010, in Bagram, Afghanistan, from hostile action.

Their Story

Ryan John Grady was a 25-year-old U.S. Army specialist from Bristow, Oklahoma. He served with Task Force Wolverine, Alpha Company, Engineer Battalion, 186th Brigade Support Battalion, and had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.

According to U.S. Department of Defense records, Grady died on July 2, 2010, at Bagram Airfield in Parwan province. The official casualty report lists his death as resulting from hostile action, though the specific incident was not detailed in public releases.

Grady's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. July 2010 was a period of intense fighting following a major troop surge, with coalition forces conducting widespread counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and other insurgent groups.

The Pentagon announced Grady's death on July 5, 2010. He was survived by his mother and other family members in Oklahoma. His body was returned to the United States for burial.

Specialist Grady is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the U.S. government and by veterans' organizations. His name appears on the Defense Casualty Analysis System and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America memorial roll.
