Their Story
Keith Erin Grace Jr. was a Specialist in the United States Army. He served with the 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, which was operating in Afghanistan as Task Force Currahee.
On August 11, 2013, Grace was killed in the Dzadran district of Afghanistan's Paktia province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire. He was 26 years old.
Grace's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The Dzadran district, near the border with Pakistan, was a known area of insurgent activity and a frequent site of combat operations.
The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to Texas for burial.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' organizations. His name is included on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Texas Capitol.
