Goyet, Mark Raymond
Corporal Mark Raymond Goyet, 22, of Sinton, Texas, was a U.S. Marine who died on June 28, 2011, in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Mark Raymond Goyet was a 22-year-old from Sinton, Texas, who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served as a Corporal with the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, part of Regimental Combat Team 8, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based out of Twentynine Palms, California.
On June 28, 2011, Goyet was killed by enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations in the Nawa district of Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was one of two Marines from his battalion killed in separate incidents that day.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, U.S. forces, particularly in Helmand province, were engaged in a counterinsurgency strategy aimed at securing population centers from Taliban influence.
According to a Department of Defense news release, Goyet's death was announced on June 30, 2011. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Local media in Texas reported on his death and his return to his hometown for burial.
Goyet is remembered on the online memorial of the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines. His name is inscribed on Panel 22W, Line 127 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
