Sergeant Kristopher James Gould was a 25-year-old soldier from Saginaw, Michigan. He served with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Knox, Kentucky. His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of the U.S. military commitment there.
On February 27, 2011, Gould was killed in Ghazni province, in eastern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. Specific details of the incident were not widely released in public reports, but it occurred in a region known for insurgent activity.
Gould's death came during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
