Their Story

Brian Lee Gorham was a 21-year-old soldier from Woodburn, Kentucky. He served as a Private First Class with Company D, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, based in Vicenza, Italy. The unit was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, PFC Gorham was wounded by enemy small-arms fire in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan on December 28, 2007. He was medically evacuated from the combat zone to the Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, for treatment. He died from his wounds there on December 31, 2007.

His death occurred during a period of intense fighting in the Korengal Valley, a remote and mountainous region in eastern Afghanistan. U.S. and allied forces engaged in frequent combat with Taliban and other insurgent groups in the area, which was a focal point of the war effort in 2007 and 2008.

PFC Gorham's death was reported by several news outlets, including the Associated Press and local Kentucky newspapers. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals.

He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, Kentucky. His name is also inscribed on Panel 17W, Line 105 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
