Their Story
Terry Kishaun Gordon was a 22-year-old soldier from Shubuta, Mississippi. He served as a Specialist with Troop E, 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, part of the Combat Aviation Brigade based at Fort Riley, Kansas. His military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On December 18, 2013, Gordon was aboard a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter on a mission in the Now Bahar district of Afghanistan's Zabul province. The aircraft crashed, reportedly after being struck by enemy fire. The incident killed all six U.S. service members on board, including Gordon.
The crash occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The mission was part of ongoing combat and advisory operations in the country's volatile south and east.
The Department of Defense announced the casualties the following day. Gordon's body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in his home state of Mississippi. His death was reported by national and local news outlets.
Gordon is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' organizations. His name is inscribed on the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Newton.
