U.S. Army Specialist Brittany Bria Gordon, 24, of St. Petersburg, Florida, died on October 13, 2012, in Qalat, Afghanistan, while serving with the 572nd Military Intelligence Company during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Brittany Bria Gordon was a 24-year-old specialist in the United States Army from St. Petersburg, Florida. She served as an active-duty soldier assigned to the 572nd Military Intelligence Company, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.
On October 13, 2012, Specialist Gordon was killed in a hostile incident in Qalat, the capital of Zabul province in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, she died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked her unit with an improvised explosive device (IED).
Her death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Security Forces, and insurgent groups, primarily the Taliban.
Her death was reported by multiple news outlets, including the Tampa Bay Times, which noted she was the first female soldier from the Tampa Bay area killed in Afghanistan. The Army posthumously awarded her the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Gordon was a 2006 graduate of Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg. Her name is inscribed on the Lakewood High School Memorial Wall and is listed on Panel 40W, Line 28 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Tampa.
