Staff Sergeant Robert Stacey Goodwin, 35, of Albany, Georgia, was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier. He was killed in a hostile incident in Salerno, Afghanistan, on September 20, 2004.

Their Story

Robert Stacey Goodwin was a 35-year-old native of Albany, Georgia. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

On September 20, 2004, Goodwin was killed in a hostile incident in Salerno, Afghanistan, a forward operating base in Khost Province near the Pakistani border. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his unit came under enemy small-arms fire during combat operations.

Goodwin's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The Salerno base was a key hub for counter-insurgency operations in the volatile eastern region of the country.

His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in several news outlets. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg.

Goodwin was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Bragg and on Panel 2W, Line 123 of the Georgia Veterans Memorial Wall in Warner Robins.
