Goodiron, Nathan Joel
Corporal Nathan Joel Goodiron, 25, of Mandaree, North Dakota, was a U.S. Army soldier killed by enemy fire in Qarabagh, Afghanistan, on November 23, 2006.
Their Story
Nathan Joel Goodiron was a 25-year-old soldier from the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in Mandaree, North Dakota. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, a North Dakota Army National Guard unit deployed as part of Task Force Spartan.
On November 23, 2006, Goodiron was conducting a dismounted patrol in Qarabagh, a district in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. According to military reports, his unit came under enemy small-arms fire. Goodiron was killed during this engagement.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In late 2006, operations were focused on counter-insurgency and stabilization efforts against Taliban and other militant forces.
Goodiron's body was returned to North Dakota. A funeral service was held at the Memorial Hall in New Town, and he was buried with military honors in the Goodiron family cemetery on the reservation. The North Dakota National Guard publicly confirmed his death.
He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Corporal. Goodiron is remembered on memorials in North Dakota, including the North Dakota Veterans Memorial and the North Dakota National Guard Fallen Soldier Memorial.
