Their Story

Edwin Gonzalez was a 21-year-old from North Miami Beach, Florida. He served as a Hospitalman (HN) in the United States Navy, assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Landing Team (2nd MDIV FMF LNT).

On October 8, 2010, Gonzalez died in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he was killed while conducting combat operations. His death was classified as the result of hostile action.

Gonzalez was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, and a major troop surge was underway, with intense fighting concentrated in Taliban strongholds like Helmand.

His death was publicly announced by the Department of Defense. The Navy Times listed him among the service members killed that week. His hometown newspaper, the Miami Herald, also reported his death.

Hospitalman Gonzalez was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorial walls, including the Navy Memorial's 'Navy Log,' and by veterans' groups honoring corpsmen who served with Marine units.
