Their Story

Billy Gomez was a 25-year-old soldier from Perris, California. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Corporal Gomez was wounded in action in Afghanistan on October 23, 2004. According to the Department of Defense, he was evacuated to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for treatment. He succumbed to his injuries there four days later, on October 27, 2004.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. In late 2004, operations were focused on counter-insurgency missions against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces, particularly in the country's eastern provinces.

The Department of Defense announced his death in a press release on October 29, 2004. His unit, part of the 25th Infantry Division, was deployed from Hawaii to Afghanistan earlier that year.

Corporal Gomez is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Schofield Barracks and on online veterans' memorials. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
