U.S. Army Sergeant Jonathan Alan Gollnitz, 28, of Lakehurst, New Jersey, was killed on September 26, 2012, in Pul-e Alam, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Jonathan Alan Gollnitz was a 28-year-old sergeant from Lakehurst, New Jersey. He served with the U.S. Army's Task Force Bayonet, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, specifically assigned to A Troop, 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, under Combined Joint Task Force-1.

On September 26, 2012, Sergeant Gollnitz died in Pul-e Alam, the capital of Afghanistan's Logar province. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident. According to reports, he was killed by small arms fire while on patrol.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with U.S. and coalition forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces.

The Department of Defense officially announced his death on September 28, 2012. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, New Jersey.

Sergeant Gollnitz is remembered by his unit and community. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Foundation in Holmdel.
