U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Ryan Allen Gloyer, 34, of Greenville, Pennsylvania, died on November 3, 2016, in Kunduz, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained in a firefight.

Their Story

Sergeant First Class Ryan Allen Gloyer was a Green Beret assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Carson, Colorado. He was a native of Greenville, Pennsylvania, and was 34 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan.

According to U.S. Department of Defense statements, Gloyer died on November 3, 2016, in Kunduz province from wounds sustained during a firefight with enemy forces. The engagement occurred during a partnered operation with Afghan commandos. No other U.S. service members were reported killed in the incident.

Gloyer's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat role in January 2015. The mission's stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan forces and conduct counterterrorism operations. Kunduz province was a major area of contention, having briefly fallen to Taliban forces the previous year.

His death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. A memorial service was held at Fort Carson, and he was buried with full military honors.

Gloyer was remembered by his unit for his professionalism and dedication. In 2017, a fitness center at Fort Carson was dedicated in his honor, bearing his name and rank.
