Their Story
Technical Sergeant Adam Kenneth Ginett was a 29-year-old explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialist assigned to the 31st Civil Engineer Squadron, based at Aviano Air Base in Italy. A native of Knightdale, North Carolina, he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On January 19, 2010, Ginett was killed while conducting counter-improvised explosive device (IED) operations in the Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense reports, he died from wounds sustained from a hostile explosive device. No further operational details of the incident were publicly released.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2010, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar, which was a traditional Taliban stronghold. The threat from IEDs was a primary cause of coalition casualties during this phase of the war.
Following his death, Ginett was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to the rank of Technical Sergeant. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The Air Force released statements honoring his service, and his squadron commander described him as a dedicated professional.
Ginett's name is inscribed on the EOD Memorial at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, which honors technicians killed in the line of duty. He is also remembered on memorials in his home state of North Carolina.
