Their Story

Robert Lee Gilbert II was a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He served with Company G, 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. According to Marine Corps records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

Gilbert was critically wounded by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations in the Badghis Province of Afghanistan on March 8, 2010.
