Gunnery Sergeant Robert Lee Gilbert II, a 28-year-old U.S. Marine from Richfield, Ohio, died on March 16, 2010, at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, from wounds sustained in Afghanistan.
Their Story
Robert Lee Gilbert II was a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He served with Company G, 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. According to Marine Corps records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
Gilbert was critically wounded by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations in the Badghis Province of Afghanistan on March 8, 2010. He was evacuated from the battlefield and transported to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, for treatment. He died from his wounds there on March 16, 2010.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The Badghis Province, where he was wounded, was an area of significant insurgent activity and IED threats against coalition forces during that period.
According to an official Marine Corps statement, Gilbert was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His death was reported by several news outlets, including the Akron Beacon Journal, which covered the return of his remains to Ohio. A memorial service was held in Richfield.
Gunnery Sergeant Gilbert is remembered on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and by veterans' organizations. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
