Their Story
Joseph Ryan Giese was a 24-year-old Marine from Winder, Georgia. He served as a lance corporal with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 2, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Before deploying to Afghanistan, he had also served on deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On January 7, 2011, Giese was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while conducting a dismounted patrol. The area was a focal point for Taliban insurgent activity and improvised explosive device (IED) emplacement.
Giese's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with a significant U.S. troop surge underway, particularly in southern provinces like Helmand, aimed at countering insurgent control.
His death was reported by several news outlets, including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which noted his Georgia roots. He was survived by his parents and siblings. The 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, known as the 'Hell in a Helmet' battalion, sustained multiple casualties during its 2010-2011 deployment to Helmand.
Lance Corporal Giese is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 2W, Line 129 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Portsmouth, Virginia.
