Their Story
Nicolas Hugh Joseph Gideon was a 20-year-old soldier from Murrieta, California. He served as a Private First Class with Company C, 1st Battalion, 40th Armor Regiment, based out of Fort Richardson, Alaska. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Gideon died on July 6, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Salerno in Khost Province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by indirect fire, a term used for enemy mortar or rocket attacks, during a hostile engagement.
His death occurred during a period of intense fighting in eastern Afghanistan. By 2009, Taliban insurgents had regrouped and were conducting frequent attacks on coalition forces and bases. The U.S. had recently begun a troop surge aimed at countering this resurgence.
The Department of Defense announced his death on July 8, 2009. He was survived by his family in Murrieta. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Riverside National Cemetery in California.
PFC Gideon was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom. His battalion, the 1-40th Armor, was later reflagged and continues to serve in the U.S. Army order of battle.
