Chief Warrant Officer 3 Thomas Joseph Gibbons, 31, of Edgewater, Maryland, was a U.S. Army helicopter pilot. He was killed in action in Bagram, Afghanistan, on January 30, 2003.
Their Story
Thomas Joseph Gibbons was a 31-year-old Chief Warrant Officer 3 from Edgewater, Maryland. He served as a pilot with Company D, 1st Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The 160th SOAR, known as the "Night Stalkers," provides aviation support for special operations forces.
On January 30, 2003, Gibbons was piloting an MH-60L Black Hawk helicopter on a training mission near Bagram Airfield. According to U.S. military reports, the helicopter crashed shortly after takeoff. The crash killed Gibbons and two other soldiers, Staff Sgt. Paul J. Sweeney and Sgt. Phillip A. Jordan. An investigation cited pilot error due to spatial disorientation in low-light conditions as the cause.
Gibbons died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2003, major combat operations against the Taliban regime had concluded, but insurgent activity persisted. U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in security and stabilization missions from bases like Bagram.
Gibbons was posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Medal. He was survived by his wife and two young children. A memorial service was held at Fort Campbell, and his name is inscribed on the 160th SOAR memorial at the base.
Thomas Gibbons is remembered on the Night Stalkers memorial and in the Army's casualty rolls. His death was among the first for the 160th SOAR in Afghanistan, highlighting the persistent dangers of aviation operations in the conflict, even during training.
