Lance Corporal Phillip Carson George, 22, of Houston, Texas, was a U.S. Marine killed in hostile action in Taliban Village, Afghanistan, on August 18, 2005.

Their Story

Phillip Carson George was a 22-year-old Marine from Houston, Texas. He served with the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, he had deployed with his unit to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On August 18, 2005, George was killed in Taliban Village, located in the volatile Kunar Province of eastern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile action, though the specific combat incident was not detailed in initial casualty reports. The area was a known insurgent stronghold where U.S. forces conducted frequent counterinsurgency operations.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2005, the conflict had shifted from major conventional operations to a protracted counterinsurgency against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces. The eastern provinces along the Pakistan border, including Kunar, saw intense and frequent combat.

George's death was recorded in the official casualty lists released by the Department of Defense. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and is included in the online casualty databases maintained by the Pentagon and independent memorial groups.

Lance Corporal George is remembered on memorial walls and in casualty rolls documenting U.S. service members who died in Afghanistan. His battalion, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, sustained multiple casualties during its 2005 deployment, a period documented in unit histories and casualty reports from the war.
