U.S. Army Specialist Matthew Eric George, 22, of Grantsboro, North Carolina, died on August 31, 2010, in a hostile incident on Route Triumph, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Matthew Eric George was a 22-year-old specialist from Grantsboro, North Carolina. He served with Company A, 173rd Brigade Support Battalion, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, which was based in Bamberg, Germany. The battalion provided logistical support to combat units deployed in Afghanistan.

On August 31, 2010, George was killed in a hostile incident while traveling on Route Triumph, a major roadway in Afghanistan's Logar Province. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device (IED) attack. The attack reportedly targeted his convoy.

George's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, the conflict was marked by a high tempo of counterinsurgency operations and a surge in U.S. troop levels, with IEDs being a leading cause of casualties for coalition forces.

Following his death, George was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His remains were returned to the United States, and a memorial service was held in his home state of North Carolina.

He is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and by his unit. His name is inscribed on the 173rd Airborne Brigade memorial in Bamberg, Germany, which honors brigade members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
