Ian Timothy Dagdagan Gelig was a 25-year-old sergeant from Stevenson Ranch, California. He served in the U.S. Army with Company A, 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On March 1, 2010, Sgt. Gelig was killed in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device detonated during a dismounted patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on southern provinces like Kandahar.
