Their Story
Daniel Joseph Geary was a 22-year-old Marine from Rome, New York. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, part of the Ground Combat Element of the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force – Afghanistan, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On March 20, 2009, Geary died from wounds sustained during combat operations in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile action, but did not release further operational specifics.
Geary's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
