Their Story

Jacob Alexander Gassen was a 21-year-old from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. He served as a Private First Class with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On November 29, 2010, Gassen was killed in a hostile incident approximately 10 kilometers southeast of Combat Outpost Lonestar in the Paktiya province of Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of an improvised explosive device attack, according to news reports from the time.

Gassen's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the conflict was characterized by a sustained insurgency, with IEDs being a leading cause of casualties for coalition forces.

Following his death, his body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Beaver Dam, as reported by local Wisconsin media.

He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Highground Veterans Memorial Park in Wisconsin and is listed on the 4th Brigade Combat Team memorial at Fort Campbell.
