Their Story
Rogelio Rolando Garza Jr. was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. He served as a Corporal with Company B, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, part of Task Force Spartan based at Fort Drum, New York. The battalion was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division.
On August 11, 2006, Garza was killed by enemy small-arms fire during combat operations in the vicinity of Jalalabad, a city in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day.
His death occurred during a period of intensified combat in Afghanistan. Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2006, Taliban and other insurgent forces had regrouped, leading to a significant increase in violence, particularly in eastern and southern regions.
Garza's body was returned to the United States. He was buried in Corpus Christi. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
He is remembered on memorials in Texas and at Fort Drum. His name is inscribed on Panel 9R, Line 124 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
