Their Story
Corey Edwin Garver was a 26-year-old from Topsham, Maine. He served as a sergeant in Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, part of the 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On June 23, 2013, Sergeant Garver was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the Zormat district of Afghanistan's Paktia province. He was on patrol with his unit at the time of the incident. The area was known for insurgent activity.
Garver's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2013, the mission had shifted to a focus on training Afghan forces and conducting counterinsurgency operations, with U.S. troops frequently engaged in combat in eastern provinces like Paktia.
Following his death, Garver's body was returned to Maine. A memorial service was held in Topsham, and he was buried with military honors. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on June 25, 2013.
Sergeant Garver was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He is remembered by his community and former unit for his service.
