Their Story

Ryan Anthony Gartner was a 23-year-old from Dumont, New Jersey. He served in the U.S. Army as a Specialist assigned to Company A, 201st Military Intelligence Battalion, based out of Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.

According to the Department of Defense, Gartner died on February 1, 2011, in Bagram, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained in a non-combat related incident. The official casualty report listed his death as 'under investigation' at the time of the announcement. No further specifics regarding the circumstances were publicly released.

Gartner's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The war saw sustained combat and counterinsurgency operations, with Bagram Airfield serving as a major coalition logistics and detention hub.

The Army posthumously awarded Gartner the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. His remains were returned to New Jersey, where he was buried with military honors.
