Mark Andess Garner was a 30-year-old captain from Surry, North Carolina. He served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, which was based in Hohenfels, Germany. His military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On July 6, 2009, Captain Garner was killed in the Arghandab District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, he died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident. The Department of Defense stated he was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Garner's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in southern Afghanistan. By 2009, Taliban forces had regrouped and were contesting control of districts around Kandahar, including Arghandab.
