Their Story

Vincent Emmanuel Gammone III was a 19-year-old from Christiana, Tennessee. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a rifleman to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, of the II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

On August 7, 2010, Gammone was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. He was one of two Marines from his battalion killed that day in the same incident.

Gammone's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2010, Helmand province was a major center of the conflict, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations against Taliban fighters.

His body was returned to Tennessee, where he was buried with military honors at Evergreen Cemetery in Murfreesboro. Local news reported that hundreds of community members lined the procession route to pay their respects.

PFC Gammone was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorials in his home state and is listed among the more than 2,300 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
