Their Story

Garrett William Gamble was a 20-year-old Marine from Sugarland, Texas. He served with Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, part of Regimental Combat Team 7, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.

On March 11, 2010, Gamble was killed by hostile fire while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

In March 2010, Helmand province was the focus of a major coalition offensive, Operation Moshtarak, aimed at clearing Taliban strongholds. Gamble's unit was part of the sustained counterinsurgency effort in the region, which saw intense fighting throughout the year.

His death was reported by local and national news outlets. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. A memorial service was held at Camp Lejeune, and he was buried with military honors in Texas.

Gamble is remembered on memorial walls at Camp Lejeune and in his hometown. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and is listed on the online 'Faces of the Fallen' casualty database.
