Their Story
Taylor James Galvin was a Chief Warrant Officer 3 from Spokane, Washington. He served as a helicopter pilot with Company D, 1st Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The 160th SOAR, known as the 'Night Stalkers,' provides aviation support for special operations forces.
According to U.S. Department of Defense statements, Galvin died on August 20, 2018, in Baghdad, Iraq. The Pentagon reported he was killed 'as a result of injuries sustained when his aircraft crashed.' The incident was under investigation, and no further details about the crash or enemy action were immediately released.
Galvin's death occurred during Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led coalition campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. By mid-2018, ISIS had lost most of its territorial holdings but remained capable of insurgent attacks. Coalition operations, including air support and special operations advising, continued to target the group's remnants.
The Army announced Galvin's death in a press release on August 22, 2018. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star Medal for his service. His remains were returned to the United States.
Galvin is memorialized on the 160th SOAR Memorial Wall at Fort Campbell. He is survived by his wife and children, according to Army statements and local news reports from Washington state.
