Their Story

Staff Sergeant Justin Joseph Galewski was a 28-year-old soldier from Fort Myers, Florida. He served with the 710th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, based in San Diego, California, a specialized unit trained to render safe bombs and other explosive hazards.

Galewski died on April 15, 2002, in Kandahar, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he was killed by hostile fire. Specific details of the engagement were not widely released, but his death was recorded as occurring during combat operations in the Kandahar region.

His death occurred during the initial phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In April 2002, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in operations to secure the southern city of Kandahar, a former Taliban stronghold, and to pursue remaining Al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters in the region.

Galewski was one of the first U.S. service members from Florida to die in the conflict. His death was reported by local Florida newspapers, including The News-Press, which noted his connection to the Fort Myers community.

He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Museum of the Forgotten Warriors in California and is listed on the Global War on Terrorism Memorial. His unit, the 710th EOD Company, continued its mission in Afghanistan for years after his death.
