Staff Sergeant Michael John Gabel served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, based in Vicenza, Italy. The 30-year-old soldier was from Crowley, Louisiana. His unit, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, had been deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 as part of a broader troop surge.
On December 12, 2007, Gabel was killed at Forward Operating Base Curry in Kunar Province, eastern Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident.
