Their Story

Chad Edward Fuller was a 24-year-old soldier from Potsdam, New York. He served as a Specialist with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York. He had deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On August 31, 2003, Fuller was killed by hostile fire in Shkin, a remote outpost in Afghanistan's Paktika province near the border with Pakistan. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged in a firefight with enemy forces. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day.

Fuller's death occurred during the early phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, which began in October 2001. By late 2003, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in counter-insurgency operations against a resurgent Taliban and other militant groups, particularly in Afghanistan's volatile southeastern provinces.

The Department of Defense confirmed Fuller's death on September 1, 2003. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His death was reported by local and national news outlets, including the Watertown Daily Times, which covered the loss of a soldier from the North Country region of New York.

Specialist Fuller is memorialized on the 10th Mountain Division monument at Fort Drum and on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Potsdam Town Hall. His name is also inscribed on Panel 8W, Line 123 of the Afghanistan Campaign Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
