Their Story
Staff Sergeant Joseph Frederick Fuerst III was a 26-year-old soldier from Tampa, Florida. He served with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) of the 53rd Infantry Brigade, a Florida Army National Guard unit based in Pinellas Park. According to unit records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On June 24, 2006, Fuerst was killed in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. The Tampa Bay Times reported on his funeral, noting his family and fellow soldiers remembered him as a dedicated soldier and a beloved son.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Tampa and is listed on the National Fallen Heroes Memorial. His name is also inscribed on the 53rd Infantry Brigade's memorial.
