U.S. Army Staff Sergeant William Ryan Fritsche, 23, of Martinsville, Indiana, was killed in action on July 29, 2007, in Kamu, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Staff Sergeant William Ryan Fritsche was a 23-year-old soldier from Martinsville, Indiana. He served with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, based in Schweinfurt, Germany. His military service included deployments to the Philippines, the Horn of Africa, and Afghanistan.
On July 29, 2007, Fritsche was killed during combat operations in the Kamu district of Afghanistan's Kunar province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire. He was one of two soldiers from his unit killed in the same engagement.
Fritsche's death occurred during a period of intensified fighting in eastern Afghanistan. By 2007, Taliban and other insurgent forces had regrouped, leading to a rise in direct engagements and complex attacks against coalition forces in remote, mountainous regions like Kunar.
The Army posthumously awarded Fritsche the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. His remains were returned to Indiana for burial.
He is memorialized on a monument in his hometown and on the Indiana Fallen Heroes memorial. His name is inscribed on Panel 22L, Line 77 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
