Their Story

Staff Sergeant Alex Iv French was a 31-year-old soldier from Milledgeville, Georgia. He served with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, a unit of the Georgia Army National Guard. According to unit records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

French died on September 30, 2009, in KWHOST, a military designation for a forward operating base in the Paktiya province of eastern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident, reportedly involving an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on his vehicle.

French was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting, with insurgent forces employing IEDs as a primary weapon against coalition and Afghan forces. U.S. troop levels increased significantly that year.

His death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Milledgeville, where he was remembered by fellow soldiers and community members.
