Chief Petty Officer Jason Richard Freiwald was a member of the United States Navy, assigned to a Naval Special Warfare unit. He was 30 years old and a native of Armada, Michigan.
Freiwald died on September 12, 2008, at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire during a combat operation. The incident occurred in the vicinity of the air base, a major coalition hub.
His death came during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2008, insurgent activity, including the use of improvised explosive devices and direct fire attacks, had intensified significantly across the country, leading to increased coalition casualties.
The Navy confirmed his death in a press release. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with combat 'V' for valor and the Purple Heart. His funeral was held in Michigan.
Freiwald is remembered on memorial walls dedicated to fallen service members. His name is inscribed on the Navy SEAL Memorial at the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, Florida.
