Lance Corporal Ronald Douglas Freeman, a 25-year-old U.S. Marine from Plant City, Florida, died on April 28, 2011, in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Ronald Douglas Freeman was a lance corporal in the United States Marine Corps. He served with the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Before deploying to Afghanistan, his service reportedly included assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

Freeman died on April 28, 2011, in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. No further specifics regarding the incident were publicly released in initial casualty reports.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, Helmand province was a focal point of intense combat between coalition forces and Taliban insurgents, with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and direct fire being leading causes of casualties.

The Marine Corps announced his death in a press release. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of lance corporal. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.

Freeman is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park in Plant City, Florida. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Garden in Tampa.
