Their Story
Michael Louis Freeman Jr. was a 21-year-old from Fayetteville, Pennsylvania. He served as a Lance Corporal with Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, part of the 2nd Marine Division based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit deployed to Afghanistan in late 2009 as part of the U.S. Marine Corps' contribution to Operation Enduring Freedom.
On February 1, 2010, Freeman was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, his death was the result of hostile action. The Department of Defense did not release specific details of the incident in its initial announcement.
Freeman's death occurred during a major escalation of the war. In late 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama ordered a surge of approximately 30,000 additional troops into Afghanistan, with a focus on securing population centers in the south, including Helmand. The 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines was among the units tasked with clearing Taliban strongholds in the province during this period of intense fighting.
Following his death, Freeman's body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal.
Lance Corporal Freeman is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and on online veterans' memorials. His name is included on the roster of U.S. service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
