Their Story
Jameel Talib Freeman was a 26-year-old from Baltimore, Maryland. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York.
On August 11, 2011, Freeman was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the village of Nalgham, located in the volatile Wardak province of eastern Afghanistan. He was part of a dismounted patrol when the unit came under attack, according to military reports.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the conflict was marked by intense counterinsurgency operations and high casualty rates among international and Afghan forces.
Freeman's death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal, according to an Army press release from Fort Drum.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Baltimore War Memorial and is listed on the 3rd Brigade Combat Team's memorial at Fort Drum. His name is also inscribed on Panel 9W, Line 127 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Boston.
